Perseid meteor shower to lit up Qatar sky Saturday

  • This Weekend Is The Perseid Meteor Show - Viewing Conditions Will Be Perfect

The shower should be visible on both sides of the equator, although it is reportedly a better watch if you're in the mid-northern latitudes, meaning the top spots are European countries, as well as the U.S. and Canada.

The stars are aligning for anyone interested in watching the Perseid meteor shower this weekend. "If you were to draw the lines of the meteors and connect them back to where they started, they all seem to radiate from the constellation Perseus", she said.

The Perseids show up every year in August when Earth ventures through trails of debris left behind by an ancient comet.

Experts say the best views will be to the east, and observers should try to avoid built-up areas. Nope! Although the peaks are the best times (as long as there's no moonlight), annual meteor showers typically last weeks, not days... building up gradually and then falling off rapidly. From our perspective, the meteors all seem to come from a single point called the "radiant", but that's because they are moving parallel to each other.

Skies will be clear enough both of the nights this weekend to see them. It averages about 60 meteors per hour.

The shower that we see from Earth is the little bits of ice and dust - that are usually no bigger than a pea - hitting the Earth's atmosphere at a staggering 134,000 miles per hour. Arriving by that time should give your eyes ample time to adjust to the darkness.

One such person is Paul Jacobs, who photographed some stunning images of the Perseid meteors over the beach at Lee-on-the-Solent in Hampshire. No special equipment is needed, but if you want the best view, it helps to be as far from artificial light as possible. Scientists from NASA also said that camping out in the country can triple the amount of visible meteors.
