  • New study finds glyphosate in kids' cereals and snack bars

The study by the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) discovered trace amounts of the most widely used herbicide in the country in oats, granolas and snack bars.

"Glyphosate, a herbicide linked to cancer by California state scientists and the World Health Organization, was found in all but two of 45 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats", the report states.

The Environmental Working Group said the levels of glyphosate it found in cereals were many times lower than the safe levels set by the EPA years ago, and even below the much more stringent levels set by California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. While five of these contained glyphosate, none were above the group's health benchmark of 160 ppb.

Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, claims that glyphosate and Roundup are not unsafe for humans-but a jury in California vehemently disagreed with them last week, ruling in favor of a man who blamed Roundup for causing his cancer.

"Today's decision does not change the fact that more than 800 scientific studies and reviews - and conclusions by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US National Institute of Health and regulatory authorities around the world including Australia - support the fact that glyphosate does not cause cancer, and did not cause Mr Johnson's cancer", the statement said. However the FDA has not yet released any official results. Producing healthy, wholesome food is Quaker's number one priority, and we've been doing that for more than 140 years.

Johnson's case was the first to go to trial because doctors said he was near death.

In a statement Quaker said: "We proudly stand by the safety and quality of our Quaker products".

Monsanto has denied a link between the active ingredient in Roundup - glyphosate - and cancer, saying hundreds of studies have established that glyphosate is safe. The team studied almost 45,000 people who had applied glyphosate as part of their jobs.

The World Health Organization calls glyphosate a probable carcinogen.

The EPA and the Food and Drug Administration say they are studying the current guidance for safe levels of glyphosate in food. But several researchers have said the IARC's determination was bogus because there is no evidence that glyphosate causes cancer.

But makers of the foods EWG tested said they and their suppliers operate within US government safety guidelines and dismissed the group's findings as irrelevant. "Monsanto said it is aware of about 5,200 cases where plaintiffs claim that they have been exposed to glyphosate-based products", one trader in Frankfurt told EURACTIV on condition of anonymity.

For example, the FDA announced that Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare, and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Inc. recalled their pillsfor heart failure and high blood pressure after finding a defect known to cause cancer. "And essentially we're just throwing it at them".

"We don't think it does enough in particular to protect children", Faber said.

However, the levels that EWG considers to be high doesn't violate the legal limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
