Turnbull Barely Survives Leadership Showdown With Dutton

  • Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull speaks during a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra Monday

According to The Australian, multiple MPs called Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton over the weekend to promise their support, should he choose to challenge Mr Turnbull for the leadership.

PETER Dutton missed a crucial dinner with colleagues on Sunday night where an uneasy Malcolm Turnbull moved to stave-off a leadership challenge and calm Nationals blindsided by overhauls to his signature energy policy.

The prime minister, meanwhile, called for unity: "We can not allow, as I said in the party room today, our internal issues to undermine our work".

Minister, the first Home Affairs Minister in our country's history and I want to thank him for his work. "People are a "disgrace" or "appalling, ' they're 'totally incompetent" and so it goes on", he wrote in the Australian Financial Review.

The stunning retreat emerged as the energy issue threatened to turn into a crisis for Turnbull's leadership, and the government worked on measures to reduce power prices to meet the demands of Coalition dissidents.

However, since then a number of backbenchers including former prime minister Tony Abbott have pushed back against the policy and Mr Turnbull's leadership.

The Prime Minister said they can not allow internal issues to undermine their work. With several rank-and-file lawmakers vowing they would not support any legislated emission reductions, such mandates are likely to remain elusive until at least a year.

Abbott had signed Australia into the Paris Agreement while in office, but later withdrew his support after losing a leadership challenge to Turnbull.

Mr Dutton represents Dickson, a marginal seat in the south east.

Peter Dutton has obviously challenged you for the leadership this morning and is now no longer in the Cabinet. Ms Sales asked whether there was a "legitimate threat" to the Prime Minister.

But his popularity isn't there, and ability to win an election looks doubtful, and some have suggested an alternative challenger such as Julie Bishop or Scott Morrison could fare better.

Dutton managed to secure a substantial portion of the vote without much time at all to rally his supporters, and these resignations will be putting a lot of pressure on Turnbull and the rest of the Liberal Party, who see it as vital to present the image of being a unified, stable party. So far only Dutton has quit the front bench, but the size of the protest vote indicates others will follow.

"I will continue to serve him loyally into the future". I think he probably still is.

"I believe very strongly we can win the next election if we get the policies and the message right, (including) lowering electricity prices and doing more on infrastructure", Dutton said in a press conference after the ballot.

"For me, the task is to do whatever I can to make sure the Coalition is successful at the next election".

"The stakes are too high for partisan and personal politics to spoil this opportunity to move energy policy into the 21st century", said Andrew Richards, chief executive officer at the Energy Users Association of Australia.

Australia's stock market also fell more than one percent on Tuesday, its biggest drop in five months. "It is really important that we put this sort of, differences... behind us and get on with our job of looking after the 25 million Australians who have put us here".

Abbott and other MPs, including George Christensen and Andrew Gee, had previously indicated that they might cross the floor to vote against the bill.

'I don't actually expect a challenge today, but we'll wait and see, ' he told the ABC on Tuesday.

"We are not going to propose legislation purely for the goal of it being defeated".
