A month before Brazilians go to the polls to vote in a presidential election, Brazil's top electoral court has ruled a popular former president jailed for corruption conviction, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, can not run.

Lula's conviction for money laundering and corruption was upheld in January.

Lula has also received backing from the UN Human Rights Committee, which ruled that he can not be disqualified from the elections as his legal appeals are ongoing.

Even as the justices were debating, the Workers' Party put out ads on social media channels featuring da Silva, holding fast to a strategy to keep the former president front and center as long as possible.

In light of the violence committed yesterday by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) against the rights of Lula and the people who want to elect him President of the Republic, the PT noted that it will continue to fight with all means to guarantee his candidacy in the October 7 elections, the organization said in a communiqué.

"We are not deciding at any level, on the former president's culpability, and much less his political legacy", said Judge Luis Roberto Barroso, who brought the case to the electoral tribunal for deliberation.

Brazil's top electoral court ruled on Friday that jailed former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva can not run in this year's presidential election due to a corruption conviction. The text also pointed out that the TSE accelerated the deadlines to analyze the registration of the leader's candidacy in order to exclude him from the presidential race. Yet, running a campaign largely from his jail cell, he has been able to capture almost 40 percent of prospective votes for October's presidential elections, according to the latest polls. Lula is the highest-profile figure to be charged in the "carwash" investigation, a sprawling corruption probe that has brought down some of Brazil's most powerful business executives and politicians over the past five years.

Lula da Silva was accused of benefiting from the renovation of a triplex in a beach town near Sao Paulo by the construction company OAS. Currently, Haddad is the candidate for vice president.

Supporters of the former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva attend a rally in Curitiba, Brazil, on August 30.

On Saturday, Haddad was scheduled to visit Garanhuns, a city in Brazil's impoverished Northeast where da Silva was born.
