Looking slow and exhausted on a sweltering night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Federer double-faulted 10 times, failed to convert a trio of set points and lost 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) in the fourth round to John Millman in a match that began Monday and concluded at almost 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

For Sharapova, it's her first loss at night at the US Open, moving her to 23-1 all-time under the lights at the Open.

Millman confessed to being in "disbelief" while he acknowledged that the second seed was well below par, but he was delighted with the fight he showed to turn the contest on its head, having been a set and a break down.

Federer had never lost a match at the U.S. Open to a player ranked outside the top 50.

Federer, indeed, did not play as well as he had in the opening three matches, when he didn't drop a set.

Asked Monday whether he thought during that time away about returning to the height of his powers, Djokovic replied: "I have imagined". All these players now at the US Open, they get access to the physios on site, but when you have a guy like Roger that every single day his body is getting taken care of, his body is getting worked on, it literally slows the ageing process.' 'Roger has a game style that has such little stress on his body, he floats around the court, he keeps the points short, he's still so quick.

But his much-anticipated quarterfinal matchup against his old rival Novak Djokovic - what would have been their 47th meeting, and seventh at the US Open - was foreclosed by the Australian, who will now meet the Serb on Thursday.

Prior to this match Federer had not lost a set as he he continues his chase for a sixth US Open triumph and 21st grand slam title.

Osaka beat No. 26 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to earn her first trip to a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

She was able to play through the pain and eventually won the match in 2 hours, 32 minutes.

The 19-year-old Vondrousova, who said she dealt with cramping, certainly helped decide the outcome: Of Tsurenko's 107 points, only 17 came via winners; 73 were her opponent's unforced errors.
