  • Donald Trump hits out at Attorney General Jeff Sessions in long-running feud

President Trump lashed out at Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a string of tweets on Monday, accusing him of hurting Republican chances in the upcoming midterm elections with a series of Justice Department investigations. "Two easy wins now in doubt", Trump tweeted.

In particular, Napolitano turned a critical eye to Trump's tweet attacking Sessions for letting the Department of Justice file charges against Reps. Duncan Hunter of Alpine, who was charged last month with spending campaign funds on personal expenses and falsifying federal reports on his political finances, and Chris Collins of NY, who two weeks earlier was accused of insider trading and lying to the FBI.

"The Democrats, none of whom voted for Jeff Sessions, must love him now", Trump quipped.

Trump continued, arguing that Democrats must be very happy with his attorney general. The Dems all hated him, wanted him out, thought he was disgusting - UNTIL I FIRED HIM! The alleged tip-off took place not during the Obama administration, as Trump's tweet suggests, but in 2017, after Trump had become president.

The president suggested that the Department of Justice's move had put his party's success in the mid-term elections in jeopardy.

Journalist John Nichols pointed out that Trump's flagrant attempt to use his authority to favor his own political party in an upcoming election by directing federal prosecutors to ignore two congressmen's allegations of criminal conduct, amounts to the definition of an impeachable offense. Fox News has reached out to the White House for additional clarification, and the Justice Department did not immediately respond.

Though Trump argued that the investigations began during the Obama administration, the charges against Collins - which include securities and wire fraud - stem from actions he allegedly took past year, and the Justice Department launched a criminal investigation into Hunter's use of campaign funds after a referral from the Federal Election Committee.

Trump has repeatedly attacked Sessions in private and in public for recusing himself from the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The tweet marked Trump's latest attack on the Justice Department, which has a long history of carrying out investigations and pursuing indictments in a nonpartisan fashion.

The tension between Mr Trump and Mr Sessions boiled over recently with Mr Sessions punching back, saying that he and his department "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations".

The White House had no comment on Trump's tweets, but said he made a decision to not leave the White House and focus on trade calls.
