  • Mickelson and Woods will team up in Paris

DeChambeau locked in his place after registering back-to-back wins at the Northern Trust and the Dell Technologies Championship, while Ryder Cup stalwart Mickelson will make his 12th consecutive appearance for Team USA.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have been named as two of Team USA's wildcard picks for the 2018 Ryder Cup.

The win guaranteed that DeChambeau will be the top player in the playoff standings when the season concludes at the Tour Championship in three weeks in Atlanta, regardless of how he finishes next week at the BMW Championship in suburban Philadelphia. He approached the event with all the enthusiasm of a trip to the dentist in his younger days but has warmed to the team format in recent years. Dechambeau, who now leads the FedEx Cup playoffs, has moved to No. 7 in the world. He declined to speak with media after his round, but is still a prime candidate to earn a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup.

He built a four-shot lead early on the back nine, before Australian Cameron Smith made it interesting, cutting the margin to one shot with two quick birdies.

DeChambeau carded an 8-under 63 on Sunday to begin the final round at 13 under, one shot behind leader Abraham Ancer. The small consolation for Ancer was moving from No. 92 to No. 56, which at least made him among the top 70 who advance to the BMW Championship at Aronimink next week.

A few others also were happy to have another week left in a long season. He capped four straight rounds in the 60s with a two-under 69.

Yet Woods, who's now ranked No. 26 in the world, said he asked Furyk at that time, "What about a playing vice captain?"

Phil Mickelson, who is also expected to earn one of Furyk's discretionary selections, also reminded the United States captain of his credentials with a magnificent closing day 63 for a 10-under-par overall total.

However Woods' form since his return to golf this year prompted Furyk to award him one of the four captain's picks set aside for players who did not qualify automatically for the team. Woods closed with a 71 and tied for 24th. He was one shot out of the lead on the front nine until a bogey on the par-5 seventh hole, and three more bogeys in five holes to start the back nine.

Mickelson and Woods were considered virtual locks, with both Ryder Cup veterans playing well enough throughout the summer to warrant spots on the team. He was also ninth in the Ryder Cup standings, narrowly missing out on automatic qualification. "Not one round. But it certainly doesn't hurt".

The top 30 will compete in the Tour Championship, the final event of the season, on September 20 to 23 at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
