Top Twitter and Facebook executives will defend their companies before USA lawmakers on Wednesday, with Facebook insisting it takes election interference seriously and Twitter denying its operations are influenced by politics.

Twitter isn't biased for or against any type of partisan but is working on ways to raise the level of debate on its platform, the company's CEO will tell a Senate hearing in Washington, D.C., today.

Google rejected requests to send its CEO Sundar Pichai or parent firm Alphabet chief Larry Page, but offered a writted statement from its chief legal officer Kent Walker. Follow the live blog below. Twitter denies that's happening.

In prepared testimony released by Facebook Tuesday, Sandberg said that Facebook was "too slow to spot" Russia's purported influence operation and "too slow to act".

Rosenberger, who testified before the same committee on foreign influence on social media last month, said she has "every expectation that [the hearing] will be serious from the lawmakers' side". Thirteen Russians were indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller this year on charges of an elaborate plot to disrupt the 2016 USA presidential election by creating fake accounts that pushed divisive issues on social media.

The afternoon hearing in the House Energy and Commerce Committee will feature only Dorsey in a hearing focused on bias and the platform's algorithms.

Top executives from social media behemoths Facebook and Twitter are set to testify Wednesday before lawmakers about the ongoing threat of foreign influence operations on their platforms, as the shadow of possible Russian interference looms over the 2018 midterm elections. "It violated the values of our company and of the country we love".

"We're shutting down fake accounts and reducing the spread of false news", Sandberg said.

Dorsey meanwhile says Twitter has continued to identify accounts that may be linked to the same Russian internet agency in Mueller's indictment.

To kick off his opening statement, Dorsey picked up his phone and said he would be tweeting out his prepared testimony.

He says such behavioral analysis "does not consider in any way" political views or ideology. Dorsey will later appear before the House at 1:30 p.m.
