  • British Airways breach sees hackers take-off with customers' payment details

British Airways has stated that it is investigating the theft of data of its customers from the website and mobile app "as a matter of urgency".

BA Chairman and Chief Executive Alex Cruz said in London the airline discovered on September 5 that bookings made between August 21 and September 5 had been infiltrated in a "very sophisticated, malicious criminal" attack.

In a statement, the airline added: "We have notified the police and relevant authorities".

The company said the breach had been resolved and the website was now working normally, and all customers affected by the breach had been contacted on Thursday night.

In the U.S., Delta Airlines said in April that payment-card information for several hundred thousand customers could have been exposed by a malware breach months earlier.

"I´ve not heard anything from them on this and I´ve just had to cancel the card I used".

"Terrible handling of the situation as I've still not received an email from BA!"

Banks including NatWest and RBS attempted to reassure anxious BA customers that they have "significant" levels of security in place, although they advised account holders to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity.

"The moment we found out that actual customer data had been compromised that's when we began an all-out immediate communication to our customers, that was the priority", Alex Cruz, BA's chief executive and chairman, told BBC radio.

It was unclear how many people were affected.

"Anyone concerned they could be at risk of fraud should consider changing their online passwords, monitor bank and other online accounts and be wary of emails regarding the breach as scammers may try and take advantage of it".

A spokesman for the ICO said it would be "making inquiries" into the British Airways hack.

The airline said affected customers should follow their bank or provider's recommended advice.
