Alex Cora discusses Trump's comments on Puerto Rico

  • Hurricane Maria devastated large parts of Puerto Rico

Donald Trump has falsely claimed that 3,000 people did not die in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria, and said the number was made up by the Democratic party "to make me look as bad as possible".

In a report released last July, FEMA admitted it was insufficiently prepared to handle multiple hurricanes in a short amount of time - Hurricane Irma struck the Caribbean two weeks before Hurricane Maria.

House Speaker Paul Ryan disagreed Thursday with President Donald Trump's assertion that the death toll from last year's hurricane in Puerto Rico was inflated.

Mr Trump said people who died for any reason - "like old age" - had been added to the total.

Among the voices correcting the president's tweets online was that of Spencer Cox, Utah's Republican lieutenant governor, who went to Puerto Rico to do volunteer aid work in the aftermath of the 2017 Hurricane season.

"Mr Trump you can try and bully us with your tweets BUT WE KNOW OUR LIVES MATTER", she tweeted.

Gidley says Trump directed the administration to provide unprecedented support to the island before, during and after two hurricanes hit Puerto Rico.

Some of Trump's critics denounced his latest tweets and statements on how he handled the response to Maria nearly a year ago.

George Washington University stood by its estimate.

Researchers at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University determined about 3,000 people died.

Commissioned by Puerto Rico's governor, the study found that the authorities' initial figure of 64 deaths was likely as low due to officials strictly classifying only certain deaths - such as those caused by collapsing buildings, flying debris, floods and drownings - as caused by the hurricane. "If you want people to take your message seriously maybe have higher production quality than a mid-level YouTube star..."

But Trump has continued to boast about the handling of Maria, calling it "an incredible unsung success" as he warned residents of the Carolinas not to take chances with Florence.

He also said that "the victims nor the people of Puerto Rico deserve to have their pain questioned".

"Trump is so vain he thinks this is about him".

Florida Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who is retiring from Congress, called the president's tweets "mind-boggling".

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who is now running for the US Senate, tweeted: "I've been to Puerto Rico 7 times & saw devastation firsthand". The loss of any life is tragic; the extent of lives lost as a result of Maria is heart wrenching. "It was devastating. It was a awful storm". And that's really no one's fault. "It's just what happened".

The US federal government's response to Hurricane Maria has come under fresh scrutiny this week.

A clear pattern emerged from the analysis: The mortality rate spiked in the months after the storm, particularly in the poorest areas of Puerto Rico, and among elderly males.

Hostin blamed the Jones Act, saying it allowed the USA government to "pillage and rape" the island since its inception in 1920, before asking why Trump didn't have an equal reaction to Maria as President Obama did to Haiti, which isn't even a US territory.
