More storm surge can be seen outside a home in Belhaven, North Carolina in this video from Amy Johnson.

Storm surge has accounted for about half of the deaths in hurricanes since 1970, according to the National Hurricane Center. Detectives are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide.

A mother and her baby died when a tree fell on their home in Wilmington, North Carolina. The father was also home, and he was taken to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The tree's massive size required special equipment from rescuers also battling whipping winds and pelting rain to extricate them. Sea level rise also adds to storm surge damage: When Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, a study found sea-level rise over the 20th century caused more than $2 billion in additional damage in New York City due to the "extra" storm surge it generated. Two septuagenarians died in Kinston in separate incidents, according to authorities.

A 68-year-old man was electrocuted at a residence on Silver Smith Circle Friday morning when he was trying to connect two extension cords outside in the rain. Ocean water flowed between homes and on to streets on the Outer Banks; waves crashed against wooden fishing piers.

Forecasters said the storm will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a sharp rightward swing to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of the week. 61-year-old Amber Dawn Lee was killed late Friday when her vehicle struck a tree that had fallen across the highway.

Members of the North Carolina National Guard search for evacuees in Fairfield Harbour, N.C., on Friday. No other information is available.

Forecasters have issued what they call a a flash flood emergency, saying areas of surrounding Carteret County are flooding that have never flooded before.

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who died in this storm", Cooper said in a statement.

Wilson County Emergency Management Agency and Lebanon Fire Department deployed six personnel to North Carolina on Wednesday morning to assist in the emergency response to the impending landfall of Hurricane Florence on the east coast of the United States. "Be extremely careful and stay alert". He moved quickly as workers helped him empty more than 1,000 mattresses from a warehouse in a low-lying strip mall. She retreated and was eventually rescued by a boat crew. "An investigation into the death is underway, but it appears there is no reason for others at the shelter to worry".

The storm made landfall at Wrightsville Beach at 7:15 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

"We're seeing potential for flooding in counties that haven't seen flooding in recent years and we're looking at 500- to 1000-year rain and flood events here in North Carolina".

The storm knocked out power as it tore across the northern part of Luzon Island - an area which is home to around 10 million people, many of whom live in flimsy wooden homes. It's since slowed down even more than it had been - moving west at just 2 miles per hour.

In Washington, President Donald Trump was briefed on Florence's impact and later tweeted, "Deepest sympathies and warmth go out to the families and friends of the victims".

A wind gust at the Wilmington airport was clocked at 105 miles per hour (nearly 170 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958.

It came as rivers swelled, tides crested and the rain wouldn't stop.
