The confirmed cases happened in Queensland and Victoria, police said, adding that the brands are sold at locations in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory.

Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said anyone else who had bought the brands of strawberries without signs of tampering should return them to the store or throw them away.

Police began looking into the potentially unsafe berries after a Facebook user on Saturday wrote that their friend took a bite of a strawberry and ate "half a sewing needle", according to the Palm Beach Post.

In a Facebook post, Joshua Gane said his friend swallowed "half a sewing needle" after biting into a strawberry.

Woolworths have said they have taken the contaminated strawberries off the shelves as the investigation continues.

'We will update the Australian public as news becomes available to us'.

Authorities said on September 13 that they believe that they had mitigated enough risk for customers to buy strawberries again, as all stock had been replaced.

"I said I need you to stop him from eating the strawberries".

NSW Police Force has received reports of strawberries contaminated with sewing needles and pins purchased at supermarkets at Tweed Heads, Taree, and Wingham.

"They suspect it is foul play, but unsure whether it was via the supplier, Woolworths or a customer", Gane said.

Investigators have also now confirmed a fourth contamination incident as having occurred in a punnet of strawberries.

TWO popular strawberry brands have been recalled from Woolworths stores across three states, including NSW, with a disgruntled former employee accused of deliberately inserting sewing needles into the fruit.

"It does appear to be an isolated incident so's the perception that people have that's the concern".

The incident, reported at a supermarket in Gatton, involves the discovery of a thin metal object in a punnet of strawberries.

Chief Superintendent Lawrence says thankfully no one has been harmed, as all the reports have come from people who have found the pins and needles after cutting the strawberries prior to consumption.

Authorities said that the contaminated strawberries-branded Berrylicious and Berry Obsession-came from two farms located next to each other in south-east Queensland.

Inquiries to date indicate the contamination affects two brands of strawberries - "Berry Obsession" and "Berry Licious".

"The idea of an ex-employee was put forward by the Strawberry Growers Association".

Jennifer Rowling of the Queensland Strawberry Growers' Association said she believed the strawberries had been "interfered with".

Queensland Health issued advice applicable to all strawberries, saying the fruit is safe to purchase but until advised, consumers should cut them up before consumption.
