Sony announces PlayStation Classic, a nostalgia-filled mini-console

20 September, 2018, 12:29 | Author: Joanna Little
  • PlayStation Classic mini retro console is launching in time for Christmas

The PS1 Classic will cost $100 and will be out just before Christmas.

The console will be updated to output HDMI and power through mini usb connection.

Sony has doubled down on the nostalgia by stripping the controllers of analogue sticks, too, going for a pre-Dualshock controller design, which means no Ape Escape, but who knows, we can dream.

We've already seen "Classic" plug-and-play systems from the likes of Nintendo and SNK, packing a wide variety of retro games into a tiny, portable system, and Sony is the latest company to get in on the fun. The system will hit stores December 3.

Sony says the included game lineup includes Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3 (yes!), Ridge Racer Type 4, Wild Arms, and Jumping Flash.

Nintendo then released another version, dubbed the Super Nintendo Classic Edition, in 2017.

It will also come with a considerably smaller price tag than the full-feature PlayStation with a recommended retail price of just under $100 dollars and 100 euros.

In terms of games, the PlayStation Classic has been confirmed as coming with "20 classic titles", however as of the time of writing only 5 of these have so far been announced by the Japanese maker. Fashioned as a mini-Playstation, the console will hold twenty classic PlayStation games. The SNES Classic packs two gamepads and 21 games for $80. Considering how notoriously hard it was (and in some cases, still is) to find an NES Classic or SNES Classic, some fans may want to get the jump on pre-ordering the PlayStation Classic as soon as possible.

Nintendo has had huge success in the last two years by releasing scaled down versions of the NES and SNES consoles - both of which quickly sold out. With the right game lineup, Sony's throwback console could be the ideal time travel machine for folks with a fondness for the early days of 32-bit gaming.
