‘Women must be heard’: Thousands march against Kavanaugh

  • Demonstrators gather Thursday outside the Supreme Court demanding that the Senate reject Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination

Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa said he now expects the Supreme Court nominee to be confirmed in a Senate roll call on Saturday.

However, Flake and Collins have sent positive signals for Kavanaugh's confirmation earlier on Thursday, hours after the FBI submitted a report to the Capitol on its investigation into the sexual misconduct accusations.

"I think it's safe to say the national spectacle the professional left has created around Judge Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation process has now reached some kind of fever pitch", he said, adding the past 17 days have been a "feeding frenzy" against Kavanaugh and his family.

It's not yet clear if Senate Republicans will have enough votes to advance the nomination and a handful of pivotal senators have not yet said publicly how they plan to vote. The nomination battle boiled down to a "he said, she said" conflict requiring senators to decide between diametrically opposed accounts offered by Kavanaugh and Ford.

The FBI reopened its background check into Judge Kavanaugh last week, after Professor Christine Blasey Ford testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that he had assaulted her when they were teenagers in the 1980s.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein noted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not interview Kavanaugh himself or Christine Blasey Ford, a university professor who has accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault in 1982.

"I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been", Kavanaugh wrote.

"This is now the 7th. time the FBI has investigated Judge Kavanaugh", Trump wrote.

If Kavanaugh is confirmed by the Senate in a vote planned on Saturday, Trump will have succeeded in placing his second justice on the top USA court and fulfilled his pledge to solidify its conservative majority.

Three Republican senators and one Democrat remain undecided.

"It looks to be a product of an incomplete investigation that was limited perhaps by the White House, I don't know", Feinstein told reporters.

In all, 293 were arrested "for unlawfully demonstrating" in the Hart building, U.S. Capitol Police said, and nine were arrested on the fourth floor of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. Democrats must gain two Senate seats and 23 House seats to claim majorities in each chamber, enabling them to block Trump's agenda and investigate his administration.

Ford, now a California psychology professor, has testified that when the drunken Kavanaugh attacked her, she believed he was trying to rape her.

Kavanaugh, along with his allies, reportedly lobbied to bolster his defense ahead of a New Yorker report on September 23 that published allegations from Deborah Ramirez, who claimed the federal judge exposed himself to her at a university party while at Yale.

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., merely said that the content of the 46-page report "raises more questions" and that it gives an "unacceptable understanding" of what actually happened.

Another on-the-fence Republican senator, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, reportedly met sexual assault survivors in her office on Thursday. "That is because I forcefully and passionately denied the allegation against me".

However, lawyers for his first accuser, Prof Ford, said that she had not been contacted by the agency. But he did not apologize for his behavior at the hearing, in which he interrupted senators, turned questions about drinking back on them and seeded his opening remarks with comments about "revenge on behalf of the Clintons" and left-wing groups. She had accused him of sexual assault during a party decades ago when they were in high school.

"I will be voting no on Judge Kavanaugh", she said.

I don't remember. How'd you get there? However, the calendars he presented during his testimony showed that Kavanaugh had scheduled gatherings strikingly similar to the one Ford described. Mike Lee replied, "Our request was to the White House, the White House then made the request of the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation into current, credible accusations of sexual misconduct".
