A limousine loaded with revelers headed to a 30th birthday party blew a stop sign at the end of a highway and slammed into an SUV parked outside a store, killing all people in the limo and a few pedestrians, officials and relatives of the victims said Sunday.
The state moved to shut down the owner, Prestige Limousine, as state and federal authorities investigated the cause of Saturday's wreck in Schoharie.
On Monday New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D, criticized Prestige for "putting a failed vehicle on the road".
"My family is just going through a lot", Abeling said. The governor said the limo failed a state safety inspection, which checks for things like suspension and brakes.
Federal motor carrier safety records indicate the company had a spotty record: Of five inspections over two years, four resulted in vehicles being taken out of service.
The accident occurred about 25 miles west of Albany in Schoharie, N.Y. The group rented the limousine for a trip to a brewery to celebrate a birthday.
Erin and Shane McGowan, also newlyweds, died in the crash. But state police say they seized four Prestige cars, including the one that crashed.
"My heart is sunken".
Those killed included two pairs of newlyweds, two brothers from one family, and four sisters from another, reported Reuters. Karina Halse lost her 26-year-old sister Amanda, who died alongside her boyfriend Patrick.
Shortly after the white stretch limousine arrived, McGowan texted Abeling's daughter to say the vehicle appeared to be in awful condition.
She added that the state Department of Transportation has banned heavy trucks from the intersection but there are constant smaller crashes. Autopsies were being performed, including on the driver, to see if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
Halse's sister, Karina, who visited the crash site Monday, said Cushing and Halse were like "two peas in a pod".
"We do need to learn from this", Sumwalt said.
State police say 20 people died in a crash in upstate NY that local officials say involved a limousine near a crowded tourist spot. The limo went across the road and hit an unoccupied SUV parked at the Apple Barrel, a local institution and popular stop for autumn leaf-peepers.
Two bystanders were also killed by a parked auto that struck them when it was hit by the limo. Police say numerous victims were active on social media and their cell phones prior to the crash and are asking for information from those who know of the posts. Douglas says the sisters "did the responsible thing getting a limo so they wouldn't have to drive anywhere". Abby Jackson, as she was known, worked as a teacher in the Greater Amsterdam School District, said her aunt, Barbara Douglas, of Dannemora.
Calls to the families of the other victims were not returned, and The Washington Post is withholding their names until they can be confirmed by relatives.
A vigil is set to be held in New Amsterdam on Monday night, where the victims were from.
