During the six-month period ended September 30, Nintendo's sales were up 4% year-over-year to 388.9 billion yen ($3.4 billion). The total software sales for Nintendo Switch reached 42.13 million.

Nintendo's quarterly sales growth slowed to 1% year-over-year, which is the worst pace for the company since the Switch launched. "The holiday season battle begins now".

Furukawa added that Nintendo's growth also relied on "more focus on online play", and "more genres and diverse games to draw in people who don't now play on Switch". The company grew its profit during the period by 25.4% to 64.6 billion yen ($572 million). The company maintained its full-year forecasts.

Almost 23 million Nintendo Switch have been sold since it's launch. First up, we have Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee and Let's Go, Pikachu! on November 16, which is followed on December 7 by the system seller that is Super Smash Bros.

"It was a quiet quarter without many big releases from Nintendo", Hideki Yasuda, senior analyst at Ace Research Institute, said prior to the release.

For context, this puts the Switch past the GameCube, Nintendo's sixth-generation console which debuted in Japan in September 2001 and went on to accumulate 21.74 million in lifetime sales. The Switch has become a haven for re-releases of older third-party games like Dark Souls and indie hits including Overcooked! 2. "From the beginning we decided on a target that would be challenging to reach, not easy", said Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa following the results. Sony and Nintendo have something to celebrate with the PS4 and Switch respectively, so are going to cheer their numbers from the mountaintops: and that's exactly what Nintendo did this week.

Nintendo hasn't announced a new Mario Kart for the Switch, but it is working on one for smartphones.
