Bus plunges into river in China, after fight between driver and passenger

Dashboard camera footage from another vehicle nearby, released earlier, had shown the bus charge onto the wrong side of the road without warning before hitting the railings of the Wanzhou Yangtze No. 2 Bridge and plunging into the river.

Rescuers recovered the wreck of the bus Wednesday night.

Four passengers who got off the bus confirmed that a 48-year-old woman argued with the driver because she had missed her stop.

The Chongqing police also posted dashcam video from a nearby auto showing the bus colliding with an oncoming vehicle before smashing through a guardrail and falling into the Yangtze, a major river in southwestern China.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, the salvage work was especially hard because of the small size of the bus, the depth of the water, limited visibility and shifting currents that impeded divers.

The official Xinhua News Agency said 13 bodies have been retrieved from the river and two others remain missing.

Authorities ultimately blamed the 42-year-old bus driver for not following safety protocols but found that both the passenger and the driver had broken the law and endangered public safety.
