Within days of the mysterious disappearance Turkish officials had made anonymous leaks to the media about the killing of the journalist, a harsh critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The call from Mohammed bin Salman took place before Saudi Arabia acknowledged that the writer was murdered and urged Kushner, President's Trump's son-in-law and a White House adviser, and Bolton to maintain the alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia, the Washington Post reported.

The Kingdom initially said Khashoggi walked out of the consulate unharmed but then said Saudi agents had accidentally killed him in a fistfight, and more recently announced that it had evidence that his killing was "premeditated".

The affair has created Saudi Arabia's worst diplomatic crisis since 9/11 and sullied the reputation of the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, whom it is alleged must have been aware of the murder plan.

The phone call is reported to have taken place on 9 October, a week after Khashoggi disappeared. The Turkish government, however, maintains that Khashoggi was assassinated by a hit squad sent from Saudi Arabia specifically for the task.

"Everybody is milking this", said Maha Yahya, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. "This is what is understood from the prosecutor's statement", said Aktay, who was also close to the journalist. He denounced what he called "the demonization of Saudi Arabia".

One person familiar with the White House's deliberations said the administration expects to impose some sanctions on Saudi Arabia over the Khashoggi killing, in part because of bipartisan pressure from Congress.

Turkish officials appear to have dismissed a theory that Jamal Khashoggi's body was given to a mystery local collaborator in Istanbul.

The outcry in the US demonizing Saudi Arabia over the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Kingdom's consulate in Istanbul threatens US-Saudi strategic ties, the former Saudi intelligence chief warned on Wednesday.

"But the Trump administration has taken a position that is devoid of moral foundation", she wrote Friday.

Aktay was first government official that Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi's fiancee, called when he didn't emerge from the consulate.

Mr Pompeo said the United States had "deep and long-term strategic relationships" with Saudi Arabia and said "we intend to make sure that those relationships remain intact".

"There's a lot of people who would say this is the wrong time to go to Saudi Arabia and meet with the leadership there".

"It is now up to the global community to bring the perpetrators to justice".
