Jamal Khashoggi was strangled shortly after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, and his body was dismembered afterward, a Turkish prosecutor said Wednesday.

It said discussions with Saudi chief prosecutor Saud al-Mojeb yielded no "concrete results" despite Turkey's "good intentions to uncover the truth".

The announcement, which came just hours after the Saudi delegation had left Turkey, was the first public statement by a Turkish official that Khashoggi was strangled and mutilated after he entered the Saudi Consulate on October 2.

"The victim Jamal Khashoggi's body was dismembered and destroyed following his death by suffocation again, in line with the advance plans", the two-page statement read.

Mojeb said Khashoggi's killing was premeditated and Riyadh said 18 suspects had been arrested.

"He has denounced the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and continues to believe that the United Kingdom must hold Saudi Arabia to account for this barbaric act", the source added.

The case has put into focus the West's close relationship with Saudi Arabia - a major arms buyer and lynchpin of Washington's regional plans to contain Iran - given the widespread scepticism over its initial response.

Cengiz also told the memorial that she wishes she had entered the consulate instead of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who had written critically of Saudi Arabia's crown prince.

Mattis, in his speech at the conference, said Khashoggi's killing undermines stability in the region, and warned that the USA may take additional actions in response to the killing.

The murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi could not be made without the approval of senior officials of Saudi Arabia.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported that Saud al-Mojeb of Saudi Arabia and Turkey's Irfan Fidan were continuing a conversation they started with an hour and 15 minute meeting on Monday.

Erdogan has said that Turkey would reveal more evidence about the killing but was not in any rush to do so, indicating that Turkish authorities will methodically increase pressure on Saudi Arabia even as the kingdom floats conflicting statements in a vain and often clumsy attempt to end the quandary. On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called upon the Gulf country to expose the people who sanctioned the murder.

Saudi reluctance to cooperate, as well as the United States investigation and Ms. Cengiz's possible meeting with Trump, complicate apparent Turkish efforts to find a resolution of the escalating crisis that would allow Saudi Arabia to save face and salvage Turkey's economic relationship with the kingdom.
