Democrats capture House majority in rebuke to Trump, Republicans retain Senate

In midterm elections two years after he won the White House, Trump and his fellow Republicans expanded their majority in the US Senate following a divisive campaign marked by fierce clashes over race, immigration and other cultural issues.

Tuesday's result was a bitter outcome for Trump, a 72-year-old former reality TV star and businessman-turned-politician, after a campaign that became a referendum on his leadership.

In the second flip of the night, USA networks called a former member of Bill Clinton's cabinet, Democrat Donna Shalala, as victor of a House seat in Florida, where she takes the place of Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who is retiring.

By 11:30 p.m. Eastern, ABC was reporting Democrats had won 209 seats and Republicans 190 had been elected to the House, making it clear that there would be no "blue wave" as Democrats had been promising for months. The party has pledged to check the president's power and start a slew of investigations on matters including his tax returns, Russian involvement in the 2016 election and actions by his administration. Many news organisations expressed near-certainty that Hillary Clinton would win, but this was not what the numbers themselves showed at the time. IN is Trump country (and the home state of Vice President Mike Pence), but Donnelly is slightly ahead in most recent polls.

U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded the Russian government meddled in the 2016 election with social media posts meant to spread misinformation and sow discord, an accusation denied by Moscow.

Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler has said he wants to investigate President Trump and Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis defeated Democratic Rep. Andrew Gillum in the Florida governor's race by one point.

History was in the making in several states, as Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib became the first Muslim woman elected to Congress and Democrat Ayanna Pressley became the first black woman elected to the House from MA. Incumbent Democrat Tom O'Halleran's race moved from "Likely Democrat" to "Lean Democrat", as the freshmen member continues to defend a seat in a district President Donald Trump narrowly won in 2016.

Democrats who picked up Republican-held seats included Donna Shalala, a former Cabinet secretary under President Bill Clinton, in Florida.

Democrats, whose very relevance in the Trump era depended on winning at least one chamber of Congress, were laser-focused on health care as they predicted victories that would break up the GOP's monopoly in Washington and state governments.

The loss of power will test Trump's political hold on House Republicans, most of whom had pledged their support for him lest they face the wrath of the party's core supporters, who remain in his corner.

The campaign unfolded against a backdrop of jarring political imagery, heated rhetoric and angry debates on immigration, health care and the role of Congress in overseeing the president.

In Indiana, Republican Mike Braun knocked off Democratic Sen.

Some of the biggest Democratic stars of the campaign lost.

Voting is also open in Virginia, Florida, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Georgia, where Democrat Stacey Abrams is vying to become the country's first black female governor. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and potential 2020 presidential candidate Sen.

USA citizens will vote to select their preferred members of Congress, both for the House of Representatives and for the Senate, as well as state Governors and down-ballot positions such as local representatives and judges. But thanks to a 2018 landscape in which there are far more vulnerable Democratic seats (26 out of 35, which includes special elections in Minnesota and Mississippi), the GOP is favored to hang onto or even increase its narrow margin of control (currently 51 senators, plus the insurance policy of the vice-president's tie-breaking vote).
