Exhibiting similar problems, a recently delivered Lion Air Boeing 737 Max 8 passenger plane crashed into the sea off Jakarta, Indonesia nearly two weeks ago with 189 people onboard.

"The pilots had a battle on their hands for a few minutes", she said.

Modern jetliners have redundant measurements to help pilots spot and disregard a single reading that looks unlikely and possibly erroneous.

Meanwhile, authorities have extended their search as they collect more body parts and shattered debris from the spot where the plane crashed during a routine one-hour flight from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang.

At a meeting on Monday, to address the grieving families of the victims, Tjahjono said that the plane did not explode mid-air and was intact when it plunged into the sea, with its engine's turbines running at high speed.

The incident which took place on October 29 resulted in the death of all 189 people on board.

Schiavo said it's clear from flight-tracking data that the pilots fought to keep the plane up. They learn the normal power settings and attitude, or nose-up and nose-down settings, for each of the various phases of a flight. But if unreliable airspeed readings were a factor, key questions will be: what was the cause - poor design or poor maintenance procedures, for example - and why previous problems were apparently not rectified.

"We don't know what the crew knew and didn't know yet", Cox said.

A Boeing spokesman said an investigation into the deadly crash revealed the faulty sensor.

"The pilots can use extra force to correct the nose down trim, but the failure condition repeats itself, so that the nose-down push begins again 10 seconds after correcting", reported The Seattle Times.

The plane's altitude was mostly about 5,000 feet (1,524 meters), but rose and fell repeatedly within a range of a few hundred feet, according to flight-tracking data from FlightRadar24.

The pilots' actions will also be studied. Indonesian officials say that all 11 such aircraft have been tested and declared safe to fly. The plane plummeted into the sea a day after having a critical sensor replaced. Earlier that same year, a Turkish-owned charter flight crashed, killing 189 people, after the pilots' airspeed indicators told them the plane was moving much faster than it really was.

"We are formulating, with NTSB (US National Transportation safety board) and Boeing, detailed inspections regarding the airspeed indicator", he said. The US manufacturer has delivered 219 737 MAX jets to customers globally, its website shows, with 4,564 orders for jets yet to be delivered. The only way to prevent this, is for the pilot to intervene and manually deactivate the system. Some experts believe the hazard has increased with today's highly automated cockpits.

I was never contacted by Lion Air. "The crew got saturated trying to figure out why their computers weren't working, and they quit flying the airplane", said William Waldock, who teaches accident investigation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Boeing, which manufactured the Lion Air plane, issues safety-related bulletins, and had previously circulated instructions about what flight crews should do if sensors fail.
