  • Jeff Sessions resigns as attorney general at Trump's request

Attorney-General Jeff Sessions submitted his resignation today at the request of US President Donald Trump.

Trump, who has been sparring with Sessions for months, tweeted the news that Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker will become the nation's new acting AG.

As Deputy Attorney General, Rosenstein would normally be first in line to replace Sessions, but Whitaker will apparently be taking his place.

Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat representing CT, took issue with the language around Sessions' resignation, noting the embattled AG was sacked by his boss and did not leave voluntarily.

During a press conference at the White House Wednesday, President Trump said he is satisfied with the performance of "most of his Cabinet", but left room for major changes in the coming days and weeks.

What will happen to the Mueller investigation?

"Given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation, Mr. Whitaker should recuse himself from its oversight for the duration of his time as acting attorney general", Schumer wrote. The piece goes on to cite law enforcement sources who say non-Russia-related leads that "involve Trump associates" are being referred to the special counsel "to encourage subjects of the investigation to cooperate". "He wants an Attorney General to serve his interest, not the public", Schiff tweeted.

And as you might imagine, the guy who wrote editorials about the Mueller investigation being improper is the guy the White House is tapping. In it, the outgoing attorney general boasts his accomplishments during his time in the position.

Sources told Fox News on Wednesday that Whitaker is expected to oversee the Russian Federation investigation, although his eligibility to do so will have to be determined by Department of Justice ethics officials.

Later, Schumer tweeted that the new acting AG, Whitaker, should recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation. They also argued that Mr Sessions should be allowed a graceful exit after he doggedly carried out Trump's agenda on illegal immigration and other administration priorities.

"If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level".
