USA mid-terms: Florida restores voting rights to ex-convicts

  • Florida residents to vote on felon voter rights initiative

The newly approved measure made Florida's ballot after the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, a grassroots membership organization led and ran by formerly convicted persons, collected more than 800,000 signatures needed to qualify the amendment. The ballot initiative will serve to restore voting rights to residents with felony records.

Florida is one of four states that permanently prevents people with felonies from voting, even if they've completed their sentence, probation and parole. The amendment passed overwhelmingly, with 64.5 percent of the vote.

Within a year, more than 100,000 ex-felons were granted voting rights. To put that in context, 13 million Floridians registered to vote for the 2018 midterm elections.

"Voters in Florida have endorsed a historic advance in democracy for the United States by adopting Amendment 4", Marc Mauer, the executive director of the sentencing project said in a statement.

"This is proof when you speak up and work hard and fight for something you believe in, good things will happen", Stratemann said.

Basically, casinos would need 60 percent approval to get a casino greenlit, and good luck getting 60 percent of Floridians to do anything at one time outside of drive terribly.

In February, a federal judge declared Florida's current procedure for restoring voting rights to felons to be unconstitutional.

Another gambling amendment Florida voters approved Tuesday was Amendment 3. "We showed the entire country that people from all walks of life can come together whether they're conservative, whether they're progressive, whether they're white, whether they're black, whether they're young and old, they can actually come together and move issues that make our communities safer, that increase contributions to the tax base and that make so much sense".

Florida's measure on felon voting rights was among those placed on the ballot by citizen initiative.

Essentially, based on research at Ballotpedia.org, which cites both supporters and opposition of the amendment, Florida Amendment 3 is created to take the legislation of gambling out of hands of legislators and put it into the hands of the citizens.

"When transgender rights are being threatened nationally, we absolutely must preserve the rights we have secured at the state level", said Carol Rose, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of MA. Felons who lose their rights must wait five years to apply for restoration.

Virginia, Iowa and Kentucky remain the only states with permanent disenfranchisement policies on the books.
