The FAA also plans to issue its own mandate to further bolster Boeing's warning, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Indonesia's Transportation Ministry said it would investigate how the Boeing passenger plane damaged its left wing on the runway.

The DGCA has ensured that all Indian operators are aware of the directive and have taken appropriate corrective action, the official added.

But a Boeing statement said a safety bulletin, sent to airlines on Tuesday, directs flight crews to existing guidelines on how they should respond to erroneous "angle of attack" data.

"Angle of attack" refers to the angle between relative wind and a reference line on the plane - the sensors' goal is to ensure that air flows over an aircraft's wings, Bloomberg reported. Lion Air is expected to offer compensation for it.

Under some circumstances, the Max jets will automatically try to push down the nose if they detect that an aerodynamic stall is possible. The information can be critical in preventing the plane from stalling.

The pilots of Lion Air Flight 610 requested permission to return to the Jakarta airport shortly after takeoff, but did not turn back before the plane entered a sudden dive and plunged into the Java Sea at speeds of as much as 600 miles per hour.

On that October 28 flight, from Bali to Jakarta, the pilot's and copilot's sensors disagreed by about 20 degrees. Chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono said the airspeed indicator and sensor problems are related.

Boeing Co. said on Wednesday it had issued a safety bulletin reminding pilots how to handle erroneous data from a key sensor in the wake of last week's crash in Indonesia.

Data from the black box of the Lion Air 737 Max that fell into the sea with 189 people on board has confirmed there was an issue with the plane's airspeed indicator. The head of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee, Soerjanto Tjahjono, told reporters in Jakarta on Monday that he was discussing the options for wider inspections with Boeing and his USA counterparts.

The flight had to be cancelled and passengers had to be transferred to a different aircraft. But the urgency of a fatal accident can trigger a flurry of such notices.

Service bulletins can be followed by airworthiness directives to airlines by the Federal Aviation Administration, giving the recommendations extra weight. In addition, a system known as pitch trim can be changed to prompt nose-up or nose-down movement. The "angle of attack" is the angle of the airplane or its wings compared with oncoming air or wind. In the early days of the jet age, the elevator trim system was linked to several accidents.
