  • Republican Ron DeSantis defeats Andrew Gillum in Florida gubernatorial race

In the governor's race, Democrat Andrew Gillum's campaign said Thursday it's readying for a possible recount.

As of Wednesday morning, DeSantis led Gillum by 43,039 votes out of almost 8.2 million cast, or a difference of 0.526 percentage points.

The campaign for Democratic Sen.

Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz called Snipes "either incompetent or corrupt" and accused her of "spinning ballots out of nothing" in the Senate seat between Republican Gov. Rick Scott and Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson. Nelson's lawyer called that race a "jump ball".

Scott's campaign responded by accusing Nelson of trying to "steal" the election.

In Florida, a machine recount is triggered if the number of votes separating two candidates is 0.5 percent or less. If recounts do go forward, the state will find itself under national scrutiny, just as it was in 2000.

Elections officials in Broward County, where Democrats have a large advantage, were still counting votes Thursday.

"The goal here is to see that all the votes in Florida are counted and counted accurately", said Nelson spokesman Dan McLaughlin.

"I will not stand idly by as unethical liberals try to steal this election from the great people of Florida", Scott said. But the agency did not announce an investigation.

Scott's lawsuit against the Palm Beach County supervisor, filed in the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Court, in part, alleges that his campaign representative was not allowed to witness the process by which elections staff create true duplicates of any ballots that may have been damaged. A hearing on that case was set for Friday afternoon. "Rick Scott's action appears to be politically motivated and born out of desperation".

Trump tweets: "Law Enforcement is looking into another big corruption scandal having to do with Election Fraud in #Broward and Palm Beach". It it is important to Gillum, these sources said, that his supporters know they are fighting for every vote.

"What's going on in Florida is a disgrace", he said.

More news: Florida recount puts Trump Senate wins on a knife-edge

A possible recount looms in tight races for Florida governor, Senate and agriculture commission. If the margin is less than 0.25 percent, the recount must be done by hand.

Elias says a hand recount needs to be conducted to determine the victor of the race.

The AP has not called a victor in the Senate race.

"On Tuesday night, the Gillum for Governor campaign operated with the best information available about the number of outstanding ballots left to count", Gillum's communications director Johanna Cervone said in a statement. DeSantis holds a lead of 38,613 votes out of more than 8.2 million ballots counted - a margin of 0.47 percentage points. "Count every vote", said Gillum in a tweet posted just minutes after Gov. Rick Scott said he filed a lawsuit against Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes.

The possibility of yet another recount for Gillum and DeSantis is a strong possibility, with likely a very interesting result.

"We're working really hard on the transition", he said.

Florida was mocked for the way it handled the infamous 2000 recount, especially since there was no uniform process then on how to proceed. That has changed, with the Legislature passing a clear procedure on how a recount should be conducted. "There's not a lot of room for strategy", Richard said.

Circuit Judge Krista Marx on Friday ordered Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher to give the county canvassing board any duplicate ballots and any "overvoted" or "undervoted" ballots that have not yet been provided to the board by 10 a.m. Saturday. She also did not know how many provisional, military and mismarked ballots need to be counted. Thousands of vote-by-mail ballots were discovered uncounted the day after the election.

Nelson lawyer Marc Elias says it's "not appropriate" for a governor to suggest he's going to use his powers to "interject his law enforcement authority to prevent the counting of ballots that have been legally cast".

"I think it is fair to say right now that the results of the 2018 Senate election are unknown and you and election officials should treat it as such", said Elias. "Nelson is going to be determined to be the victor and he's going to return to the United States Senate", Elias insisted during a Thursday morning conference call with reporters.

Once Florida counties submit their unofficial election results to the Department of State, Secretary of State Ken Detzner, a Scott appointee, will review the results and decide whether to order recounts.

Under Florida law, a recount is mandatory if the winning candidate's margin is less than 0.5 percentage points. DeSantis defeated Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum. Bill Nelson by.22 percent.
