Pompeo to meet top aide to Kim Jong Un on Thursday

  • U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks to reporters during a news briefing at the State Department in Washington

Trump had been asked about the administration's announcement, in the middle of the night as Tuesday's midterm elections results were coming in, that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's Thursday meeting with a key aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had been postponed.

The talks between President Donald Trump's top diplomat and the North Korean delegation, which had been due to take place in NY on Thursday, "will now take place at a later date", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

The State Department said the talks would be rescheduled "when our respective schedules permit". But the Blue House would not reveal the reason for the postponement, referring questions to the State Department.

Trump and Kim held their first summit in Singapore in June- the first summit of an incumbent US president and a North Korean leader.

Pyongyang has complained that Washington has not made concessions in return for the moves it has taken and last Friday warned it could resume development of its nuclear program if the United States did not drop its sanctions campaign.

"Not only complete denuclearization, but our capacity to verify that that has taken place is also a prerequisite to lifting economic sanctions", he said on CBS.

"What remains to be done is the United States corresponding reply", it added.

But Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, said that the postponement was a bad sign.

The 15-member Security Council has unanimously boosted sanctions on North Korea since 2006 in a bid to choke off funding for Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The meeting comes with the two sides at loggerheads almost five months after the summit, in which Trump and Kim pledged to work toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

US officials have said Vietnam's socialist market economy could be an example for North Korea.

U.S. critics say that North Korea has yet to make any concrete concessions and it has rejected demands for what it described as its "unilateral disarmament".

A North Korean tourism industry official recently told the Chosun Sinbo that Panmunjom, where Moon and Kim held their first summit in April, is the most popular tourist destination in the North.

South Korea's foreign ministry said the meeting delay was "regrettable" but insisted that "excessively pessimistic interpretation was unnecessary".

North Korea is getting increasingly angry at the USA, as talks are deadlocked and tensions between the two countries are on the rise, a source familiar with the discussions told CNN.

Mike Pompeo was subsequently commissioned to negotiate, especially with Kim Yong Chol, a senior north Korean leaders, the content and timing of this commitment is still vague.

South Korea's presidential office said the government would later announce its stance over the postponed meeting, but South Korean news agency Yonhap said South Korean officials were notified by the USA of the postponement before it was announced in Washington.
