The gunman then apparently killed himself.

Investigators believe Long used a legally purchased.45-caliber Glock 21 with an extended magazine during the shooting, and they're trying to figure out why he did it. Authorities said it's unclear what his motive was.

It is believed that the gunman was David Ian Long, a 28-year-old military veteran.

A law enforcement official said Ian David Long wrote on social media ad he shot people at Borderline Bar and Grill in LA.

The gunman who killed 13 people at a bar in Southern California was a Marine who served one combat tour in Afghanistan, and was last stationed in Kaneohe Bay.

Ted Deutch, a Democratic congressman from Florida who represents Parkland, where a February school shooting left 17 dead, said this week that he expected House Democrats to focus on bills with more bipartisan support.

President Donald Trump shared his condolences via Twitter.

The Marine Corps says they, "Extend [their] deepest condolences to the families of the victims in this senseless tragedy".

The gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood and his face partly covered, witnesses told TV stations.

"I dropped to the floor", Sarah Rose DeSon told ABC's "Good Morning America".

Helus worked narcotics, was on the SWAT team for many years, and was an instructor. About four minutes after arriving on the scene and after hearing shots fired inside, he went through the front door and was hit multiple times, Dean said. The shooter was later found dead at the scene.

"He was an unbelievable man", sheriff's Capt. Garo Kuredjian said.

"There's no doubt that they saved lives by going in there and engaging with the suspect", said Dean, who was set to retire on Friday.

A victim in Wednesday night's shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks reportedly survived another mass shooting, just over a year ago.

The Borderline, which includes a large dance hall along with several smaller areas for eating and drinking, was holding its regular "College Country Nights" Wednesday night when the attack took place.

California already has universal background checks.

"(The deputy said), "Hey, I have to handle a call. "The turnout (to give blood), the patriotism we have in these communities it's quite a turnout, I'm loving it".

In the Senate, Republicans are usually only open to discussing possible legislation when a high-profile shooting happens in their state, the other aide said.

"Yeah ... I'm insane, but the only thing you people do after these shootings is "hopes and prayers" ... or "keep you in my thoughts" ... every time ... and wonder why these keep happening ..." That exit leads to a patio where people smoke.

"I literally feared for myself around him", Colell said in an interview. He and a California Highway Patrol officer ran into the bar where Helus was shot.
