The attacker was later identified as 28-year-old Ian David Long, a US Marine Corp veteran.

Law enforcement officials indicated, too, that the shooting was carried out with "military efficiency".

A second law enforcement official, Ventura County Sheriff's Captain Garo Kuredjian, said that - based on time stamps - the gunman apparently stopped shooting inside the bar and posted to Instagram.

The official told The Associated Press that Ian David Long had Facebook and Instagram accounts and that he posted about his mental state and whether people would believe he was sane.

Authorities haven't named all the victims of the attack. Around 15 people, including several who were hurt "jumping out of windows, diving under tables", were also injured, he added.

Police are now investigating Long, a decorated marine who served in Afghanistan, who killed himself after the shooting.

Long is reportedly responsible for a mass shooting at Thousand Oaks bar that left 12 dead, and then turned the gun on himself.

Once he helped get people down the street to safety, Wennerstrom said he and others went back to help anyone remaining. 'I know where I'm going when I die, so I wasn't anxious to sacrifice myself'.

"(He) said to her, 'Hey I got to go handle a call.

In one instance, 38-year-old Colell says Long grabbed her rear and midsection after she refused to return a cellphone he said was his.

"I literally feared for myself around him", Ms Colell said in an interview. "He was probably the only student that I was actually scared of when I coached there".

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents leave Long's house in Newbury Park, Calif., Thursday.

"This is not going to be easy for a very long time", he said.

For the former Newbury Park High School track coach this day has been full of emotions - from sadness to guilt. Both were closed because of a destructive wildfire in the area. There were rumors Long suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Investigators have not commented on a motive for the rampage or whether mental illness played a role.

Long, who was armed with a single handgun, a.45-calibre Glock 21, which he purchased legally, was found deceased at the Borderline Bar and Grill, the scene of the shooting in the city of Thousand Oaks northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

"I was concerned because I knew he had been in the military", Tom Hanson said.

Deputies responded and a mental health specialist who assessed Long anxious he might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder but found no grounds to hospitalize him.

Outside her family's home, Orfanos' mother, Susan Schmidt-Orfanos, made an emotional plea for Congress "to pass gun control so no one else has a child that doesn't come home".

"I've never seen anything like it, we can only pray all involved". "Fact is I had no reason to do it, and I just thought... life is boring so why not?"

Telemachus Orfanos, 27, died on Thursday and his mother said that she did not want prayers and instead demanded gun control.
