Frustrated Wizards players engaging in 'verbal altercations' during practices

  • Wall x Beal

During a recent practice, several Wizards' players got into verbal altercations with one another, hurling profane comments to head coach Scott Brooks and team president Ernie Grunfeld, according to the Washington Post's Candace Buckner.

On Monday morning, ESPN reported the Wizards aren't actively shopping Wall and Beal, but that the organization has made it known in league circles the two guards are available for the right price.

Though Wall, the number one pick in the 2010 draft and a five-time all-star, is a favorite of Washington ownership, trading him away would be hard for financial reasons. There has been an obvious disconnect between the franchise point guard and his teammates as the Wizards have struggled early in the 2018-19 season, with a 5-11 record through their first 16 games.

At some point, the Wizards' brass has to consider blowing this roster up and embarking on a complete rebuild. This squad, as now constituted, isn't good enough to win an NBA Finals, or even advance past the first or second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Teams are looking to clear cap space ahead of the upcoming free-agency frenzy this summer, rather than add more contracts onto their payroll. This caveat could make moving either player - especially Beal - more hard. Otto Porter is owed almost $82 million over the next three seasons (includes this season).

The Wizards' best path to improve is trading Beal and acquiring talented young players and/or draft picks.

Yup, good times in Washington. Since Wall joined the team, it has finished no higher than fourth in the Eastern Conference. But the results prove an entirely different picture.
