The new Range Rover Evoque is also the first vehicle to feature "ClearSight Ground View" technology, which is created to allow the driver to virtually see through the hood and under the front end of the vehicle by projecting a 180-degree view of the ground onto the vehicle's upper touchscreen.

Under normal driving conditions, the mild hybrid engines shut down when coasting at speeds below 17km/h to save fuel, but the belt-driven starter/generator can also lend a hand boosting power and torque when needed. Land Rover even plans to offer some kind of electric or hybrid version for its entire lineup by 2020.

The new Evoque features the latest version of Land Rover's corporate grille, flanked by distinctive LED daytime running lights and large side air intakes.

Land Rover's hybrid technology integration manager, Dave Skipper, says that the maker is making a concerted effort to lower emissions and that this is just the first step of many. Tata has already unveiled the SUV and it does look absolutely stunning. The current Range Rover Evoque competes with the likes of the Mercedes GLC, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 in our market.

Power will likely come from a selection of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, while a plug-in hybrid model could be on the cards too.

Land Rover haven't neglected the Evoque's all terrain capabilities either.

Even though it will replace a seven-year-old vehicle, the second-generation Evoque won't be an all-new development according to the latest reports. The cargo area is six per cent larger (a total of 591 litres, or 20.9 cu. -ft.) than that of the previous model as well as wider, with capacity increasing to 1,430 litres (50.5 cu. -ft.) when the 40/20/40-split second-row seats are folded.

It's also now more efficient, with Ingenium petrol and diesel engines, as well as new Hybrid-electric and 48-volt mild hybrid options.

The auto is built on a new space-saving Premium Transverse Architecture.

All-wheel drive and an updated version of the Active Driveline with Driveline Disconnect maintain the Evoque's off-road performance.

On the inside, the new Evoque looks more modern and luxurious than the outgoing model. The rear view mirror can display the images made by the camera in the lid of the boot - very handy when the rearward view is blocked by passengers or bulky luggage.

The Evoque is available with the same twin-screen Touch Pro Duo as used by the Velar, which positions two 10-inch touchscreens above one another on the central dash.

The Evoque incorporates a technology dubbed "ClearSight Ground View" that allows you to effectively see through the hood via a multi-camera video feed when maneuvering over hilly terrain or even negotiating tight parking scenarios. The Ground View system proved vital in positioning the vehicle correctly on the train tracks - so we have no doubts it'll be flawless to help avoid kerbs when parking - while the rear-view mirror really does take visibility from poor to outstanding.
