  • A Honduran migrant converses with U.S border agents on the other side of razor wire after they fired tear gas at migrants pressuring to cross into the US from Tijuana Mexico Sunday Nov. 25 2018. The mayor of Tijuana has declared a humanitarian crisis

President Trump has repeatedly threatened to close border crossings to prevent the migrant caravan from entering the U.S. Although members of the caravan have been in Tijuana for several days, this is the first time that a significant group has massed at the border fence. Close to 3,000 migrants took Mexico up on the offer. Children screamed and coughed as the tear gas was carried by the wind towards people who were hundreds of feet away, not attempting to enter the US.

But amid the stinging gas, several migrants turned back. She ruled out that Mexico would become a "safe third country" for the migrants trying to reach the U.S.

"Families are frightened and soldiers are shooting tear gas at toddlers".

Hours earlier, The Washington Post quoted her as saying that the incoming administration of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador had agreed to allow migrants to stay in Mexico as a "short-term solution" while the US considered their applications for asylum.

"Mexico should move the flag-waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Needless to say, it's an intense scene.

CBP added that some demonstrators "attempted to illegally enter the USA through both the northbound and southbound vehicle lanes at the port of entry itself".

Some attempted to enter through San Ysidro, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement.

Irineo Mujica, who has accompanied the migrants for weeks as part of the aid group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, said the aim of Sunday's march toward the US border was to make the migrants' plight more visible to the governments of Mexico and the U.S. The migrants in that episode also reportedly threw rocks and bottles at US authorities.

Rights groups have accused the US government of stalling the processing of asylum claims, allegations the US Customs and Border Protection denies.

Currently, 5,000 migrants are in a camp in Tijuana while the Trump administration is urging the Mexican government to keep them from the border.

"People had thought that they were going to open the gates, but that was a lie", Caballero said.

"Every once in a while, a new group gathers there, at the U.S. -Mexico border fence - and then pretty quickly after that, they are dispersed using tear gas".

The Trump administration has demanded that Mexico agree to host migrants who apply for asylum in the United States at the southern border as they wait for their hearing before an immigration judge in the United States.

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC, took to Twitter to accuse critics of having to "really hate President Donald Trump to not understand the problems created by the caravans". During his presidential campaign, he promised he'd have Mexico pay for the wall. When asked if any of the agents had been hurt he admitted they were not.
