  • Nooses found at Mississippi state Capitol one day before special election

Two nooses were discovered on the grounds of the MS state Capitol on Monday morning, along with signs referring to Tuesday's Senate special election, a state spokesperson said. "On Tuesday, you can reject Espy's liberal policies by voting for Cindy Hyde-Smith - the Republican who stands strong for our conservative values", her campaign said Monday a statement.

The runoff Senate victor will serve the final two years of the six-year term of now-retired Sen.

The sign also read: 'We need someone who respects the lives of lynch victims'.

He said the matter is under investigation by the Mississippi Capitol Police. Then came her remarks that she'd be willing to take a front seat at a "public hanging", drawing charges of racism as she faces a black opponent in a state with an ugly history of lynchings.

Jonathan Winburn, a professor of US politics and public policy at the University of MS, said he expects the race to be "more competitive than the norm in MS", but said he's not convinced the Hyde-Smith controversy will be enough to deliver her the same fate as Moore. Swennumson was always planning to vote for Espy, but felt more certain about her decision after Hyde-Smith's "public hanging" comment.

Such donations have come under fire due to Hyde-Smith's recent comments and actions making jokes out of lynchings and glorifying Confederate history. It says MS had 581 lynching during that time, the highest number in any state.

Espy, who is a lawyer, said: "I found out later that this guy, the president, was a really bad guy". Espy said during a speech on Monday night at a predominantly African American church.

Hyde-Smith was in her second term as Mississippi's elected agriculture commissioner when Republican Governor Phil Bryant chose her to temporarily succeed longtime Republican Senator Thad Cochran, who retired in April amid health concerns.

MS voters are deciding a racially charged Senate election that has dredged up the Deep South state's ugly past.

On judges, immigration, taxes and trade, Ms. Hyde-Smith would back his agenda while Mr.

Espy, a former Clinton administration secretary, hopes to pull off an upset in the deep Red State.

"No one twisted your comments", he said at the debate.

Speaking outside - between the Tupelo Regional Airport terminal and the runway on a chilly day - Trump called his fellow Republican, "a very special, special woman who is going to do a special job".
