President Donald Trump decided past year to remain committed to Afghanistan, and about 15,000 USA troops serve largely in a support role for Afghan security forces.

Three U.S. service members were killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb detonated next to their vehicle in the embattled province of Ghazni, U.S. military officials said.

On Tuesday, NATO's Resolute Support mission said Jasso's death was likely the result of friendly fire from an Afghan security forces unit.

Three US soldiers were killed and three wounded by a bomb in Afghanistan Tuesday, according to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Officials would not give further detail until next of kin were notified, saying only that the injured were evacuated and receiving medical treatment. Ghazni has become the most hotly contested province in Afghanistan, which is no small feat given the Taliban's mastery in strongholds such as Helmand and Kunduz.

The attack occurred on November 27 near Ghazni city in central Afghanistan.

He said US Special Forces had been conducting operations with Afghan forces around Ghazni city since Monday.

Indiscriminate assaults by the Taliban and fighters from the Khorasan Province branch of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) have left millions of Afghans fearing for their lives each and every day.

The casualties came after another US soldier was killed in the southwestern province of Nimroz on November 24. Brent Taylor of the Utah National Guard was killed in an "insider attack" by a rogue Afghan commando he was training in Kabul. The great majority of USA forces withdrew by the end of 2014, but those still in the country often are involved in supporting combat situations on the ground as well as by air.

The latest deaths come just days after a US soldier was killed in a firefight with Al Qaeda forces Saturday, defense officials told Fox News.

The U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014, but still provide close support to Afghan forces and carry out counterterrorism operations.
