Pelosi nominated to reclaim speakership, still faces test

  • Pelosi wins her party’s nomination for speaker but ‘never Nancy’ Democrats continue to hold out

The threat of a leadership fight has given rank-and-file Democrats a tantalizing opportunity to air their grievances and make demands in the hopes of winning concessions from Pelosi, who has shrugged off the potential for a challenge, saying she is certain she will have enough votes to reclaim the speaker's gavel.

Pelosi garnered 203 yes votes and 32 no votes - far fewer than the 63 Democrats who voted against Pelosi's leadership bid back in 2016. Nobody came to me, and at this point, I think it's unreasonable for anyone to expect a vote when they haven't even asked.

The vote came after Pelosi struck a tentative deal with the Problem Solvers Caucus, an offshoot of the bipartisan and business-friendly No Labels organization.

I served in the California State Assembly during her prior tenure as Speaker, and watched with great admiration as she worked with House climate champions to pass the landmark American Clean Energy and Security Act, a comprehensive bill to create clean energy jobs, combat climate change, and transition America to a clean energy economy.

Democrats on Wednesday also elected Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer for majority leader and South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn for majority whip. The tally against her this time was barely more than half the number of members who voted against her in caucus two years ago.

Pelosi still has to face a House floor vote from both parties on January 3, when the next Congress begins.

"I said we need her now more than ever before", Lewis told TPM as he exited the meeting.

Clark, the three-term incumbent from the Massachusetts Fifth District, north of Boston, won a contested race to be House Democrats' vice chair, 144 to 90, to become the sixth-ranking member of next year's leadership team. "She will get the votes". The signatories, however, don't include a handful of incoming freshmen who said during their campaigns that they would oppose her, a line many have continued to maintain.

In a statement released when Pelosi received the caucus's backing, Moulton said he, along with fellow Pelosi critics Rep. Kathleen Rice, of NY, and Rep. Tim Ryan, of OH, were invited by Pelosi to meet with her.

She will need 218 votes to officially be nominated as speaker.

Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, was reportedly considering running for speaker against Pelosi but ultimately decided not to. But one by one, the powerful California congresswoman picked off the would-be challengers and smoothed the skeptics.

But two of the critics who met with Pelosi Wednesday said they remained at odds, and that her speakership quest was in peril.

Moulton said he - along with Reps.

Rep. Brian Higgins removed his name from the letter and flipped his position to back Pelosi after receiving assurances that a couple of his policy priorities would top the list for Democrats in 2019, with him being "the lead person on the Medicare buy-in", according to an interview with The Buffalo News.

Pelosi is expected to win Wednesday's internal caucus election but the California Democrat still faces opponents as she tries to shore up support before whole House votes on speaker in January.

"People have spoken. They're looking for shifts in leadership, they're looking for some generational change, " Hayes said.
