How Cohen's Plea Compares To What Don Jr

Oh, and as journalists are noting, if Cohen is guilty of lying to Congress, that means Don too.

Donald Trump's former personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty on Thursday to lying to key congressional intelligence committees to help his ex-boss, but even worse news for the president is now just five weeks away.

He also criticized Cohen, saying he was "a weak person and what he's trying to do is get a reduced sentence". His lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said that Cohen was a "proven liar" and that Trump's business organization had voluntarily given Mueller the same documents cited in the guilty plea "because there was nothing to hide".

The plea stemmed from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign conspired with Moscow to boost Mr Trump's chances, and put new pressure on the President.

"These developments make clear that my colleagues and I must step in and provide accountability", said Nadler (D-NY).

Hanging Trump out to dry, Cohen testified under oath in court that the president had directed him to break campaign finance law, while pleading guilty to bank and tax fraud.

Among other lies, Cohen said he told Congress that all discussions about building a Trump Tower in Moscow had ended by January 2016, when they had actually continued until June of that year.

The timing was not lost on Trump's lawyer handling Mueller's criminal investigation. "I was very focused on running for president".

As he left the White House shortly after the court proceeding concluded, Trump called Cohen "a weak person". It nearly became reality in October 2015 when an obscure Russian real estate developer signed a letter of intent sent by Cohen for a 15-floor hotel, condominium and retail complex in Moscow.

Sater and Cohen continued to email about the foundering project well into June 2016, soon after a much-scrutinized meeting at Trump Tower in NY between Trump's son, Don Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner, campaign chairman Paul Manafort and several Russian attendees, purportedly to discuss the possibility of "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

Nadler, whose committee would have subpoena and investigative power come January, said even "dangling a pardon in front of Manafort, who is a witness in a serious investigation in which Trump is either a subject or a target, could be viewed as obstruction of justice".

"But zero, I mean I will tell you right now, zero, I have nothing to do with Russian Federation", he said.

Whitaker was advised of the plea ahead of time, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

"In truth and in fact, and as Cohen well knew, Cohen's representations about the Moscow Project he made to [Congress] were false and misleading", prosecutors said in the nine-page document.

"These false statements regarding the continued pursuit of a Moscow-Trump Tower deal during much of the presidential campaign only underscore the importance of a thorough investigation into any financial entanglement between Trump and Russian Federation", he said.

Mr Cohen has previously said he would "take a bullet" for the President.

According to BuzzFeed, Sater knew the deal had fallen through when Trump tweeted in July 2016, writing "For the record, I have ZERO investments in Russian Federation".

Thursday, Trump suggested that his consideration of a Moscow tower was all part of being a businessman who was also running for president.

The ultimately failed effort to "pursue a branded property in Moscow" was just the latest in decades of efforts by Trump to get into the Moscow real estate business.
