Kawhi and Durant balled out in Raptors-Warriors slugfest

  • Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry warms up before the team's NBA basketball game against the Portland Trail Blazers in Oakland Calif. Friday Nov. 23 2018

The Warriors were depleted considerably for the hotly-anticipated showdown.

Curry has helped his MVP case during his absence.

The short-handed Warriors were also missing forwards Draymond Green (sprained right toe) and Alfonzo McKinnie (sore left foot), both of whom sat for the seventh straight game.

Even while sidelined, Curry captivated audiences this week by corresponding with a nine-year-old girl on Twitter, who wrote him to complain that his Under Armour Curry 5 basketball shoes don't come in girls' sizes.

She talked to Teen Vogue about why she wrote the letter, and said that it wasn't just about her getting to wear the sneakers - she wanted all girls to have the same chance that boys do.

Curry had worked out earlier Thursday, but the team said he'd make his comeback Friday in Detroit instead.

The night had a post-season buzz, and the fans stood for the extra period, erupting when Green knocked down a three with 2:07 to play to put Toronto up by three.

Toronto luminaries dotted the audience for the matchup between the National Basketball Association powerhouses, from Drake to Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock. Jonas Jerebko added a season-high 20 points, but it wound up not being enough as the Dubs lost their fifth straight road game. An injury took Leonard out of that contest, allowing the Warriors to come back and steal a win before eventually sweeping the series. As evidenced by their record when leading after one, the Raptors' starting unit has a big hand in dictating the direction in which games will go.

The Raptors dominated so thoroughly in Thursday's first quarter, some scenes felt surreal. Pascal Siakam breezed past Andre Iguodala for a thundering dunk.

While Golden State shot just under 58 percent from deep in the first quarter, Toronto separated itself with its 3-point shooting - the Warriors failed to connect on a 3-pointer in the first quarter.

In what should've been Kawhi's night to bask in all on his own, some dude named Durant had other plans, matching Leonard's season-high and raising him a game-high in points while shoving an egregious 51 down the Raptors' throats and nearly single-handedly stealing one for the ailing Warriors, who were without Steph Curry and Draymond Green.

Durant capped an 18-point third quarter with a 32-foot pull-up three, the final basket in a personal 13-point streak. The Raptors made just 1-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second. Lowry got a steal on the next Golden State possession.
