President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump officially kicked off the Christmas season Wednesday night when they participated in the 96th National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony.

Last year, rows of branches sprayed white and lit from below were a haunting first sight for anyone courageous enough to tread down the hallway and this year, people are describing the First Lady's bold choice of red trees as similarly nightmarish.

Trump and "Fox & Friends" co-host Ainsley Earhardt toured some of the most iconic locations in the presidential residence, and the first lady offered personal thoughts on what the display means to her.

"We are in [the] 21st century and everybody has a different taste".

This year's display also features 72 handmade ornaments representing six regions across America in the East Room, 40 topiary trees in the East Colonnade that some have said resemble Gilead from The Handmaid's Tale, as well as 29 trees adorned with more than 14,000 red ornaments in the Grand Foyer.

At the panel event, Mrs Trump also spoke about her son Barron, saying the 12-year-old is "all into sports" so did not spend time on social media.

Official White House video released Monday shows Melania walking through the mansion's spacious rooms and hallways, admiring the festive, if somewhat confusing, decor.

"I hope everybody will come over and visit it", she said as the crowd erupted in applause.

As the crowd erupted in applause, Trump added: "In real life, they look even more handsome". This year, for the "American Treasures" theme, she opted for a patriotic red, white, and blue, with an emphasis on her "Be Best" program.

The First Lady herself shrugged off the jokes yesterday, saying that tastes differ.

Trump included the opioid crisis and how it affects children as one part of her three-pronged platform, "Be Best", which she launched in May.
