New Zealand won their first game at the Sevens Stadiums in Dubai easily, beating Kenya 34-7.

New Zealand were made to work harder in their 29-12 win over Russian Federation, with a first-half double from Goss and a second-half brace from Stacey Waaka getting them home after the match sat in the balance at 12-7 at halftime. After falling behind 7-0 after a try from Hannah Tyrrell, the Kiwis answered through Blyde and Broughton to take a 10-7 halftime lead.

Andrew Knewstubb was celebrated for his outstanding weekend by being named in the tournament Dream Team as well as picking up Player of the Final and the Tournament.

They had previously beaten Fiji 38-7 and Spain 29-7, and will now play Ireland in the quarter-final.

Samoa opened their tournament with a 21-19 win over Argentina but were pipped by South Africa 19-12 before defeating 17-15 in their final game of the day.

A top-four finish this season means automatic qualification for the 2020 Olympics.
