Jose Mourinho's public fallout with Manchester United star Paul Pogba has escalated further after Saturday evening's draw at Southampton.

United now lie 16 points off Manchester City after just 14 games and it certainly looks like they'll face a real fight to even finish in the top four this year.

Goals from Romelu Lukaku - the Belgian's first for United since mid-September - and Ander Herrera turned the match on its head before halftime, repairing the damage done by lacklustre early defending from the visitors.

United conceded their 22nd and 23rd goals of the season inside the first 20 minutes before levelling it up before half-time but Mourinho refused to blame the system or his makeshift defenders for another slow start.

"Doesn't matter the system we play, has to do with the characteristics of the players. "(Not winning) has to do with the characteristics of the players.

'We lost so many balls in midfield, that was hard to have that continuity, ' Mourinho said in a post-match interview. We don't have many mad dogs - the ones that bite the ball and press all the time.

"When the players don't understand that simplicity is genius, especially in some parts of the pitch, they keep and keep playing too complicated football and it's too hard to have that continuity".

Despite not getting on the score-sheet, Rashford proved his importance to the Red Devils by setting up both of his side's goals. "And you kill the mentality of the good honest people around you", Mourinho reportedly added during his rant at Pogba.

"What we needed to improve in this game was simplicity in midfield".

Nevertheless, United were unable to get the third goal in the second half, making the comeback meaningless as they left St Mary's with a measly point.
