New York City police are hunting an unlucky suitor who dropped an engagement ring down a Times Square grating while proposing to his fiancee.

The ring then fell about eight feet down a grate and the incident was caught on nearby security cameras.

The panicked couple sought the help of the police to find the diamond ring, which had fallen nearly 2.5m into the city's utility system.

Comments by netizens have been largely positive, with many saying this is what they love about NY, and others praising the city's police force.

Police have an urgent message for the couple who lost their engagement ring in Times Square: We have the ring. They managed to pull the ring out of a utility grate on Saturday morning.

'She said Yes - but he was so excited that he dropped the ring in a grate'.

The good news, officers has recovered the ring. "Help us find them?"

Unfortunately for the couple, the NYPD does not have the couple's details, therefore it can't reunite them with the ring. He has short brown hair and a manicured beard.
