A group of prominent journalists and intellectuals issued an open letter protesting against his visit, saying it was "unethical and politically inappropriate". After offering numerous contradictory explanations, Riyadh later said Khashoggi had been killed and his body dismembered when negotiations to persuade him to return to Saudi Arabia failed.

The killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of the crown prince, at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul, has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with the West and battered Prince Mohammed's image overseas.

The killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a vocal critic of Saudi leadership, has set off a firestorm of demands from United States lawmakers for a strong response to the kingdom as the White House has been reluctant to assign blame to the crown prince.

Khashoggi, a trenchant critic of the crown prince who relocated to Virginia and wrote op-eds for the Washington Post, was killed by Saudi operatives inside the kingdom's Istanbul consulate on October 2, triggering global condemnation.

In an interview to CNN, Pompeo was asked if he could confidently tell Khashoggi's four children that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was not involved in his murder, Pompeo said he had "read every piece of intelligence" in possession of the United States authorities and concluded "there's no direct evidence linking him to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi".

Trudeau said he also brought up the need for better answers on the killing of journalist Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the ongoing imprisonment of Raif Badawi, as well as the need for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid in Yemen.

Pompeo reiterated his insistence that there was no "direct evidence" that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (better known as MBS) ordered the killing of Khashoggi, who lived in the U.S. and wrote for The Washington Post.

Canada has been outspoken on human rights in Saudi Arabia, which has retaliated by breaking off diplomatic relations and vowing to end trade.

He added that the murder had been a test for the whole world, but insisted he did not want to damage the Saudi royal family.

Meanwhile Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has told CNN that he saw all the intelligence held by the U.S. on the killing and said there was no direct evidence linking Prince Mohammed to the murder. The revelation comes a few days after the newspaper reported that the Central Intelligence Agency had concluded Prince Mohammed had likely personally ordered the killing. "There is no direct reporting connecting the crown prince to the order to murder Jamal Khashoggi", Al Jazeera quoted Pompeo as saying.

There was no immediate word from the Saudis, but financial markets have been expecting the deal to be renewed between the kingdom and non-OPEC member Russian Federation as the cartel prepares to meet next week in Vienna.
