After Tumultuous Season, Urban Meyer To Leave Ohio State

Ohio State says Urban Meyer will retire after the Rose Bowl and assistant Ryan Day will be the next head coach.

Meyer, 54, who has spent the last seven seasons with the Ohio State program, including winning a national championship in 2014, was calling to tell him that he was stepping down.

Athletic Director Gene Smith will name offensive coordinator Ryan Day as the new head coach, according to the university.

Meyer has been Ohio State's head coach since 2012, amassing an 82-9 record - and never losing to the school's arch-rival, Michigan. A shocking blowout loss at unranked Purdue on October 20 pushed Ohio State to the fringe of the national championship chase and prompted all sorts of questions about Meyer's future.

Taking Meyer at his word that he is fairly certain he will never coach again means forgetting he's been down this road before only to come back.

Meyer was suspended for three games at the start of this season for his role in handling domestic violence allegations against a now-fired assistant coach.

It's not the first time that Meyer's health has had an impact on his coaching career. He coached wide receivers in 1987.

The university suspended Meyer two days before training camp in August when Smith's ex-wife, Courtney Smith, accused Meyer and others within the football program during an interview with Stadium of turning a blind eye to accusations of abuse she made against her ex-husband. There used to be people who thought OSU was above hiring a coach from I-AA as well, but that worked out okay the decade before this one.

Meyer might be retiring so he can distance himself from one of the recent big scandals in college football.

Miami - For the same reasons Meyer would make a lot of sense at Florida State because of the recruiting benefits and path to the playoff, Miami could be a flawless post-retirement home.

Meyer cited health issues after that SEC title game loss to Saban, but eventually chose to stay for another year, his worst in major college coaching as the Gators went 8-5 overall, 4-4 in the SEC.

Recruitment: Ohio State's battle for Young came down to the local school, Maryland, and another national power in Alabama.

But the loss to Purdue weighed heavily and Ohio State finished No. 6 in the playoff rankings. The Buckeyes will play in the Rose Bowl against Washington on New Year's Day, which will serve as Meyer's coaching finale.

Everyone had to chase Meyer, who would win two titles, and that chase led to to the hire of Nick Saban, who arrived in the SEC two years after Meyer got to Florida. Since then, he's coached at Utah (2003-04), Florida (2005-10), and Ohio State (2011-18). Meyer has about $38 million left on his contract.
