  • Samsung Galaxy S10+ Leaks In Highest-Resolution Renders Yet

The report claims the company will save 5G for an upcoming device set to be released later in 2019, so you may have to wait a while to get the biggest benefit from the Snapdragon 855. Make no mistake, the internal platform name of "sm8150" had been accurate all along, but the company chose to continue their existing branding scheme for the next mobile platform's marketing name-not unlike older Qualcomm flagship mobile platforms like the msm8996 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 820) or msm8974 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 800).

That include 5G connectivity, of course - Qualcomm touts the Snapdragon 855 as the first commercial mobile platform supporting multi-gigabit 5G. Enabling 5G connectivity in the Modo Mod is Qualcomm's X50 modem, the same modem reportedly used by the Snapdragon 855. Much like a year ago, Qualcomm shared hardly any specific details concerning the new chipset, but did provide info on a few of the things that makes it different from the Snapdragon 845.

Verizon (and AT&T, and Sprint) has already confirmed that it will be welcoming 5G on the back of an unannounced Samsung smartphone. With the 5G-ready Snapdragon 855 mobile platform, your next flagship smartphone will be capable of utilizing the high-speed 5G networks once operators are ready.

More information on the Snapdragon 855 should be released over the next few days during the Snapdragon Technology Summit. However, the company did give us a sneak peek at some of tomorrow's announcements. The Snapdragon 855's performance is three times better than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 845.

Devices with Snapdragon 855 should also see a significant improvement in computational photography thanks to the new Spectra 380 image signal processor (ISP), which will include computer vision capabilities.

Lastly, the "Snapdragon Elite Gaming" feature was teased, which should combine performance, audio and battery life for an improved gaming experience.

Qualcomm has also introduced a new ultrasonic sensor for under-display fingerprint sensors.

At the same time, Qualcomm also pointed out that the 3D Sonic Sensor still able to scan one's finger even if it is wet or oily which made it more reliable than optical-based solutions. Beyond that, there's not much else we can tell you today. (It's unclear if this pattern will continue with the S10.) Samsung is at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019 where the Snapdragon 855 has been unveiled, which we're taking that to mean the company is nearly certain to include the new Snapdragon on its next flagship.
