  • Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng arrested in Vancouver, faces extradition to U.S.

Canadian authorities said Wednesday that they have arrested the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies for possible extradition to the United States.

A spokesperson from the federal Justice Department said the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies was arrested.

"As there is a publication ban in effect, we can not provide any further detail at this time".

Further details on the allegations of sanctions busting against Meng are yet to be revealed because of a gag order reportedly sought by her.

Meanwhile unconfirmed reports surfaced in April that the USA was investigating Huawei for possibly violating Iran export bans, a scenario that got fellow Chinese firm ZTE into significant trouble earlier this year.

Representatives of Huawei, one of the world's largest makers of telecommunications network equipment, could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters. The company previously said that it complies with all applicable laws everywhere it operates, "including the applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US, and European Union".

Ms Meng is the daughter of Huawei's founder.

The aim of the Justice Department's investigation is to prevent companies, such as Huawei and ZTE Corp. that may be answerable to the Chinese Communist Party, from gaining access into the USA economy amid allegations of spying on its citizens.

Meng's arrest, which was first reported by the Globe and Mail, comes less than two months after USA lawmakers sent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a letter urging Canada to ban Huawei's equipment from Canadian wireless networks. "The company believes the Canadian and USA legal system will ultimately reach a just conclusion".

The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa said her human rights were violated and demanded her immediate release.

The arrest comes amid a trade war between the United States and China.

Huawei's CFO was arrested in Canada, according to a new report in The Wall Street Journal.

Huawei's relationship with the USA just took a turn for the worse. Huawei has denied the links.

The United States and Australian governments have long expressed concerns about the security implications of using telecommunications equipment from China. BT still planned to use Huawei phone mast antennas and some other products from Huawei, it said.

Huawei overtook Apple earlier this year to move into the No. 2 spot, according to Business Insider.
