Urban Meyer has interesting response when asked if he will coach again

  • Urban Meyer retires from Ohio State but at age 54 is the former Ute coach really finished with college football

A report issued by an investigative committee left a lasting stain, detailing behavior by Meyer that could have taken down a coach of lesser stature. I also want to say "thank you" to coach Meyer.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Meyer started his coaching career with a two-year stint at Bowling Green State. Within months, he had accepted his "dream" job at Ohio State.

The university hasn't given any other details at this time.

Day, like Riley at OU, had completed two seasons as quarterback coach, though Day was not in charge of the Buckeye offense (Kevin Wilson is).

Day coached the quarterbacks at both National Football League stops.

Smith said the university did not do a nationwide search, emphasizing stability and consistency. "He is known for getting his guys on the right track, he's always sharp with his reads, he understands the game so well and he's so passionate about it". He led the Buckeyes to the first College Football Playoff title in January 2015 and the last two Big Ten championships.

But to assume that the staff will stay static in the seasons to come is to overlook Day's background: Despite having a history with Meyer-he was a grad assistant at Florida in 2005-this is a coach who's a relative outsider to the Buckeyes' system. He coached wide receivers in 1987.

When discussing the expectations at Ohio State, Day said the top one is to "win the rivalry game", followed by winning "every game after that". "I'll visit with recruits on campus, and then I'll have conversations with them if they feel necessary because I'm still really close with that (2019) class".

Ohio State's inquiry revealed that Meyer had known about domestic abuse allegations against Smith since at least 2015, when police investigated the case - and when, according to Courtney Smith, she told Meyer's wife about it. He tweeted Tuesday he is still committed to the Buckeyes.

"I've learned so much from you on a daily basis and will forever be in debt to you", Day said to Meyer during the press conference. "He gets his coaching points in, but he doesn't do a lot of yelling".

"This has been put into consideration a couple of times and most definitely wasn't an easy decision to make".

Is there a new team to beat in the Big Ten? Meyer will start feeling better, and then he'll get bored, fast; he's not the kind of retired coach fans will get accustomed to seeing out for a grocery run or at the local auto wash.

Rutgers coach Chris Ash was defensive coordinator for UrbanMeyer for two seasons at Ohio State, including the 2014 national championship team.

Murphy noted that Day was known to be approachable off the field, no matter the conversation. He later served as an assistant coach at Illinois State and Colorado State before working at Notre Dame for six years.

Former safety Tyvis Powell tweeted that it "was truly an honor to play for not only the best coach in America, but a great mentor as well". He has been at different colleges and the National Football League and he is able to put his players in positions to succeed.
