  • Rare suicide car bombing kills at least three people in Iran

Videos posted online by Iranian news agencies, purportedly from Chabahar, showed thick smoke rising in the area after the blast.

An official told TV that "the terrorist who carried out the attack was killed". The suicide attacker, driving a vehicle loaded with explosives, drove up to the police headquarters, according to General Mohammad Pakpour of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

While rare, Iran has been targeted in recent years by militant attacks. No militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Chabahar lies in Sistan-Baluchistan province which has always been a flashpoint, with Pakistan-based Baluchi separatists and Sunni Muslim extremists carrying out cross-border attacks targeting the Shiite authorities.

In October, the separatist Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice) group kidnapped 12 Iranian border guards in the remote province, five of whom have since been released. He said no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, adding that the various aspects of the attack would soon come to light after thorough investigation is concluded. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, blamed Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for the attack, allegations denied by both countries.

"We express our condolences to the government and the people of Iran and the families of the victims of this attack", the Ministry of External Affairs said.

"Foreign-backed terrorists kill & wound innocents in Chabahar", Zarif said on Twitter on December 6.

"In 2010, our security services intercepted & captures extremists en route from UAE".

Chabahar, near Iran's border with Pakistan on the Arabian Sea, is home to a new port recently built and is an economic free zone for the country.

Chabahar is also the site of a port complex, which is being developed in cooperation with India as part of a new transportation corridor for landlocked Afghanistan.

Such acts of violence will also "boost the Islamic Republic of Iran's resolve to fight terrorism", said Jahangiri, calling for all-out efforts to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal, in a tweet message had strongly condemned the terrorism in Iran's port city of Chahbahar.
