First transgender Miss Universe contestant doesn't win, still makes history

  • Angela Ponce Miss Spain 2018 was the first transgender contestant during The MISS UNIVERSEĀ® Competition. Contestants from around the globe spent the last few weeks touring filming rehearsing and preparing to compete for the Miss Universe crown

Hung was captured on camera talking with Miss USA, Sarah Summers, and Miss Colombia, Valeria Molares, about how hard it would be for Miss Cambodia, Rern Sinat, competing in the pageant as a woman who can not speak either English or Spanish.

Messages of support were pouring in Sunday on Twitter after Ponce's exit.

The 66-year ban on transgender Miss Universe contestants officially ended in 2012, but no one ever made it through to the final competition until Ponce. "I got the medics on me".

Everyone cheering for #MissSpain! She competed against women from 94 other countries and territories. She was selected by an all-female panel of judges, which included Monique Lhuillier and past Miss Universe winners.

"If she can further educate people about what are the needs of the transgender community to get us to be more compassionate towards them..." Before the competition on Sunday, she posted on Instagram in Spanish, "This is for you, for those who have no visibility, no voice, because we all deserve a world of respect, inclusion and freedom".

"I'm here to represent diversity of humans in the world", she said.
