Google reveals plan for $1B NY expansion with new campus

The 1.7 million square-foot campus, called Google Hudson Square, will include leased properties at Hudson Street and Washington Street, the company said in a blog post on Monday.
According to Porat, Google is growing faster in areas outside its home base of the San Francisco Bay Area, noting that the company this year opened new offices and data centers in locations including L.A.; Detroit; Boulder, Colo.; Tennessee; and Alabama. The company has more than 7,000 employees in NY.
Following Amazon's controversial plans to build a new headquarters in New York, Google has announced plans to boost its presence in the city with a new $1 billion campus in the West Village. Amazon.com Inc. recently announced it had split its new second headquarters in half, between the Washington, D.C., suburbs and Long Island City, in the NY borough of Queens.
The Manhattan campus will comprise two buildings on Hudson Street and a third on Washington Street. NY had 254,270 tech employees last year, with the labor pool growing 17 percent from 2012 through last year.
Google has contributed more than $150 million in grants and employee-matched giving to NY nonprofit institutions since 2011, according to Porat.

It is a "fairly sensible" move for Google given the amount of available talent pool, Atlantic Equities analyst James Cordwell said.
But Google is not the only company headed to NY for business expansion. "As an American company, we cherish the values and freedoms that have allowed us to grow and serve so many users", Pichai said in opening remarks. Our investment in NY is a huge part of our commitment to grow and invest in United States facilities, offices and jobs.
Bottom line: NY is better off relying on its natural advantages to attract employers, and should quit offering special deals in the name of jobs.
