Manhunt underway after suspect fired into vehicle, killing 7-year-old girl

The father of a 7-year-old girl killed in a drive-by shooting pleaded with the public to help authorities in the manhunt for a gunman who opened fire on a mother and children in a auto outside a Houston-area Walmart.

According to Harris County sheriff's Maj.

Sheriff's Maj. Jesse Razo said the teenagers who were in the auto are "shaken" and "devastated".

Authorities are searching for a red pickup truck, left, in connection with the fatal shooting Jazmine Barnes, right.

Jazmine's mother, LaPorsha Washington, 30, was shot in the arm and Jazmine's 6-year-old sister was struck by shattered glass, the sheriff said.

"The family should be celebrating and spending time together anticipating the new year and instead they're making plans to bury this innocent, precious child", Gonzalez said.

Jazmine Barnes was killed when the unknown suspect pulled up next to her mother's auto at about 7 a.m. and began shooting into the vehicle for an unknown reason, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted. Sheriff Razo told reporters that the two other sisters in the auto were unharmed but "shaken" from the attack. A total of 5 occupants in the vehicle witnessed this innocent child, their loved one, shot and killed before their eyes.

The 7-year-old girl's mother was shot, too, Gonzalez said.

The suspect, who is still at large, "is considered armed and unsafe", Razo told reporters.

"I urge you, whoever did this, you know who are, please turn yourself in now", Razo said. "They lost a sister, especially during the holiday season".

'Because we will be looking for you. He was described as being in his 40s and having a beard, Razo said.

At a media briefing, Harris County Sheriff's Office Major Jesse Razo advised the public that the killer may confide in someone about the crime, and urged anyone with information to come forward.
