  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left center is received by Brazil's President-elect Jair Bolsonaro at the military base Fort Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro Brazil Friday Dec. 28 2018

The two issued the warm words to the media after a meeting in a century-old military fort on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach, at the beginning of the first-ever visit by an Israeli prime minister to Brazil.

The incoming Brazilian president also characterized his meeting with Netanyahu as an "unprecedented moment in our history".

But the prime minister's staff said Netanyahu will first go to Rio de Janeiro for a meeting with Bolsonaro then travel to Brasilia for the January 1 inauguration.

"Brazil is a huge country with huge potential for the State of Israel, economically, diplomatically and vis-à-vis security", tweeted Netanyahu. An embassy transfer could put at risk lucrative Brazilian poultry and halal meat exports to Arab countries.

The much-awaited trip marks the end of an era of strained ties between Brazil and the Jewish state. Many peoples were exiled from their lands; they all disappeared, found new lands or were absorbed into other peoples.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Brazil's President-elect Jair Bolsonaro on Friday announced a nascent "brotherhood" between their countries that will boost economic, military and technological cooperation.

"Brazil is the land of land of promise", Netanyahu said in a line that - after it was translated into Portuguese - brought a small smile to Bolsonaro, who otherwise stood rather expressionless during the statements. He said that for his country to overcome obstacles, "we need good allies, good friends, good brothers, like Benjamin Netanyahu".

Bolsonaro said before and after his election that Brazil would follow the United States lead and transfer its embassy to Jerusalem. Brazil has traditionally backed a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Bolsonaro discussed Israel during a meeting in Rio with Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, late last month.

The two also visited a synagogue among tight security including snipers on nearby roofs, where Netanyahu emphasized his hopes the two countries could operate in a more aligned and friendly manner in the future.
